“The builder,” I said, “must have worked hard to have the circles coincide with the corners of the table and the columns.”

Emilia looked up.

“Their circumference,” Emilia said, “indicates projections of the angles of the inner frame of the roof as well as the molding over the table.”

When she passed between the altar and the columns, I followed her eyes inside, then just over the beam spanning the southern perimeter, I saw a hole about the size of a fist, so perfect and symmetrically situated that there was no doubt it had been placed there deliberately. It coincided with the position of the rose on the exterior molding, and this made me think there must be some kind of play of light being made us of as a kind of mobile adornment.
